Setting Goals for 2012
Yes, we know that setting goals for the next year is usually the issue in early January or late December, but who forbids us to do the same in March? Especially since intermediate results of the first 3 months are already known, and it is the best time to correct plans for the future. So, what to strive for this year?
1. Breaking the Micros
If 2011 associates for you mainly with hard struggle at cash tables, then it's time to return to lower limits and rethink the basics of poker. Everyone knows that micro limits is a home area for numerous “donkeys” and “calling stations”, so, you will have to abandon the third level of thinking and floating on the three streets in favor of good old ABC poker. Even if you are an experienced regular, rethinking the micro limits will bring freshen your approach to the game.
Purpose: For Beginners
2. Getting to the Final Table of a Live Tournament
Entering the final table of the offline tournament is a dream of every poker player. But let’s try to be realistic. If you are playing poker for a little more than six months, it is too early to aim at the finals of EPT or WSOP. It would be much wiser and cheaper to check the tournament schedule of the local casino and register in some inexpensive event. Who knows, maybe, very soon you will become a local star, who later captures all glory of the world. By the way, most well-known professionals began their poker careers from small offline events, where they could hone skills and gain experience. Why not try the same?
Purpose: For Regulars
3. Finding a Backer
We're not talking about a famous tennis player Boris Becker, but, aiming at “backer” - a person or a fund that lends or posts money for a player so that he/she can enter a tournament or play in a cash game. The backer and player usually split the winnings, if there are any. So, in fact, backer is kind of investor.
If you are already a successful player, who shows good results in online, finding a backer must become one of your main priorities for 2012. A good backing deal will open doors to the world's biggest tournaments with huge prize money and lots of cameras, as once happened to Ivan Demidov. The whole poker world started talking about Ivan in 2008, when the Russian finished second and third in the WSOP and WSOPE Main Events. However, not everyone knows that Demidov did not have enough money to play these not the cheapest tournaments on his own and had to contact Sergei Rybachenko. Sergey saw potential in Demidov and proved to be right. However, Rybachenko is not a philanthropist. Helping Demidov brought him good money and aroused interest to poker in Russia. If you are interested in this topic, we recommend you to check such sites as SharkStaking, The Poker Farm and the Bad Beat. Repeating the path of Ivan Demidov will not be easy, but that's worth a try, right?
Purpose: For Pros
4. Cashing in Main Event
It's time to gather all you will and make a breakthrough in a major offline tournament. No need to register in the Main Event and sit for hours waiting for aces. Everyone knows the rule: nits do not win tournaments. As 2010 World champ - Jonathan Duhamel advises: "To get into the money, you have to be very patient. Try to play mostly from hijack, cutoff and button positions, and avoid playing out of position with weak cards. Sometimes, you should call preflop with monsters, hiding the real strength of your hand. You need to play every hand with maximum efficiency, and when making a couple of mistakes, make them as cheap as possible". Truth comes out of the mouth of the champ...
Purpose: For Pros
5. Adding a Zero (or more) to Bankroll
Regardless of your account balance - $ 100 or $ 10,000, one of your main goals this year will be adding a couple of zeroes to your bankroll (and we do not mean that you have to lose all your money). To achieve this goal you will have to approach the game seriously and responsibly, as well as provide yourself with an arsenal of useful tools, such, as Holdem Manager, for instance. Yes, you will need some time to dig in the settings, but your win rate will appreciate all the efforts by returning all the costs with high interest. "Faster, Higher, Stronger!" – as sounded slogan of the first Olympic Games.
