Oliver Speidel has rolled in the money after winning the Aussie Millions Main Event

30/01/2012

According to good tradition we will begin our review with the Aussie Millions Main Event. As you might remember, last week 659 players started their campaign for the glory and a major trophy - $1,600,000. Among the contenders was Phil Ivey himself, but this time worm turned from him, as iconic poker pro fell short of Aussie Millions final table, busting in 10th place.

Most players felt relief by the world’s best poker player’s bust, but not only 26-year-old local pro – Oliver Speidel, who he was slightly disappointed by Ivey’s absence. “It would have been cool to have him at the final table,” he said. “He’s an amazing poker player and it was great to play against him.” However, Speidel himself occurred to be a rather troublesome rival for his opponents. It took him less than 6 hours to get rid of five out of six finalists.

Yann Dion was first to go, as his pocket 7-7 could not improve against Speidel’s Q-Q. Dion was followed by Hong Kong-native Bjorn Li – the chip leader at the final table and one of the favorites considering his significant experience in online poker. Instead Li never really got anything going and ended up crashing out in sixth place when he lost a coin flip against Mohamad Kowssarie.

Phil Ivey’s offender - Patrick Healy was sent out the door next. He tried to play his As-Kd tricky, pushing all-in on the board 9c-8c-4h, but was unable to squeeze Speidel’s 9h-8h out of the hand. Mohamad Kowssarie was eliminated next, after his A-2 could improve against Speidel’s K-K. The latter then needed all his luck, after his preflop all-in with 8-9 was called by Mike Krstanoski with K-8. The nine magically appeared on the flop and Speidel entered the heads-up play against Kenneth Wong.

In heads-up on Speidel’s side were not only poker gods, but also the dealer. He gave pocket nines to Wong and aces to Oliver. As you can imagine, the both players were doomed to put all their chips in the middle. The strongest starting hand in poker hold up, making Oliver the fourth consecutive player from Australia to win the Aussie Millions and keeping the trophy and $ 1,600,000 in Melbourne.

It must be acknowledged that Oliver Speidel spent two amazing weeks in Melbourne, showing just incredible results. He finished 2nd in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout event, 6th in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Bounty event and then added the Main Event title to that record. After the biggest win of his career the newly champion could not keep back his feelings and celebrated his victory as no one before him. He jumped on the table, lay on his back, picked up bundles of his newly won cash and rubbed it all over his body. Well, maybe, if we were him, we would do exactly the same.Congratulations to the newly champion!

Final table payouts:

1. Oliver Speidel - $1,600,000
2. Kenneth Wong - $1,000,000
3. Mile Krstanoski - $610,000
4. Mohamad Kowssarie - $405,000
5. Patrick Healy - $300,000
