02/05/2012

The highly awaited India Poker Legend (IPL) tournament, April edition took place from the 4th-8th April 2012 at Casino Royale, Goa. The IPL weekend action included a high stakes INR 100k buy-in NLHE freezeout event and an INR 5k double re-buy plus add-on. The response to the IPL main event was encouraging with 31 participants making it an extremely large prize pool by Indian tourney history and maintaining the organizers (The Shark) as the premier high stakes tourney organizers in India.

Following action was witnessed at the India Poker Legend poker tournament :

Wednesday April 4th: INR 3K Mega Satellite -

The first event of the India Poker Legend weekend was the 3K mega satellite held on Wednesday, which allowed first time poker players wanting to try their hand at poker in a casino the opportunity to do so. The event guaranteed 3 weekend packages, which included entry into Day 2 (5k) , Day 3 (15k) and the super satellite of Day 4 (10k). This event saw many first timers in Goa with 3 full packages and 2 half packages awarded to the top 5 finishers.

Thursday April 5th: INR 5K Double Re-buy + Add-on -

Day 2 saw a decent response with 56 players participating including tournament regulars such as Dhaval Mudgal, Laveena Belani, Anil Gulati, Pranav Bagai amongst many first timers from all over India. The tournament structure allowed for double re-buys, ensuring fast & furious poker action including 65 re-buys and a total of 39 add-ons resulting in a massive prizepool. The first 6 places were paid and the final 10 were decided after 6 hours and another 2 hours 30 minutes of final table play saw the another female winner at the IPL, Laveena Belani. Shabby BS (2nd) and Sumit Khurana (3rd) rounded up the top 3 finishers.

Friday April 6th: INR 15K No Limit Hold’em Freeze-out -

Day 3 of the tournament weekend saw a smaller field due to players resting before the 100k main event to be held the following day and 51 players attended the 15k freeze-out. The event saw many regular tournament pros such as Abhishek Goindi, Apoorva Goel, Fredrik Hallan, Rakesh Sharma, Dhaval Mudgal, amongst others. The tournament lasted a total of 9 hours 20 minutes with Rakesh Sharma winning the event after battling the final table for over 4 hours, with Apoorva Goel finishing 2nd and Poros Agarwal coming 3rd.

Saturday April 7th: INR 100K No Limit Hold’em Freezeout -

The eagerly awaited main event of the India Poker Legend was held on the third day featuring a high stakes 100k freeze-out tournament. The poker room had a real buzz before the start of the event, with one of the hardest tourney fields in India preparing to take down the title including regulars such as Jasveen Saigal, Sangeeth Samoh, Aditya Agarwal, Uday Patil and Ramandeep Gujral. The event had 31 registrations with many cancellations at the last minute. The final table saw an intense heads-up battle between Abhishek Goindi and Fredrik Hallan, after seeing off challenges from Jasveen Saigal in 3rd and Pranav Bagai in 4th (Pranav entered the final table as massive chip lead, but could not hold onto his chips long enough). After 9 hours and 15 minutes, Abhishek Goindi emerged as the India Poker Legend Main Event winner taking a massive first prize.

Overall, players who attended the weekend complimented the organizers from The Shark on excellent structures set for all days of the events. The organizers were extremely happy with the turnout considering the response other tourney organizers are getting after announcing 10-12 events a year. In a statement they said “We only see numbers for the 100k event at the IPL increasing from here on and hope to have over 50 players competing for the next edition. Response for the smaller events was decent due to the IPL editions being limited to 4 in a year with large POY prizes. Moving forward we have some unique events planned in the coming 6-12 months as part of our Premier Indian Poker Tournament Brand.” The next IPL event is set to happen from 18th-22nd July in Goa, so all poker players should start planning their attendance from today.
