Customized Prop Bets
Bored of folding your hands pre-flop? Frustrated of getting dealt dead cards from the past one hour? Want a piece of the hot action?
This is what you must be facing in most of the live games you play. As for me, I am usually bored of playing just one table after getting used to playing more than 8 tables on online poker. So when I usually get bored, I don’t make it an excuse to play bad or make loose calls and most importantly chase poor draws. Instead, I get myself busy with Prop Bets.
If you’re not familiar with the term, it is the short form for proposition bets. These are the bets which are made on the flop and the outcome of the game does not matter to the prop bets. You might have seen it on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker especially when Phil Ivey is playing.
So, in my home games, I made some custom-made prop bets (in variation with the real type of poker prop bets). Here are a few things you need before getting yourself into prop bets- a notepad/writing pad, pen and most importantly a watchful eye. If you are efficiently equipped with these 3 items, you can jumped immediately in the world of pure fun gambling. Please note, unlike the professionals, keep your prop bets value to a decent amount and not bigger than what you can manage.
Here are some of the prop bets, hope you like them:
1. Suit-up: You choose a suit (diamonds, clubs, hearts or spades) and make sure your opponent (of the prop bet) both choose different suit. For example, your suit is diamonds and your opponent chooses spades. If there are two or more diamond cards on the flop, you win 10 Big blinds from your opponent. And this goes same for your opponent if the flop contains two or more spade cards.
Note that all the wins/loses are recorded in a piece of paper by one of the players and is settled ONLY at the end of the game not during the game.
2. Jackpot Jack: If a Jack of your suit falls exactly in the middle of the flop, you win a nice jackpot worth 50 Big Blinds.
3. Big Boy: This is the main prop you want to win. You choose 3 cards (Suits don’t matter) and if the flop contains all your 3 cards, you win 100 Big blinds from your opponent. One thing you have to note is that there are multiple ways you can make your big boy. For example: if your Big Boy is Jack-ten-four, you are qualified to win the prop if the following cards come on the flop:
- Jx-10x-4x
- Jx-Jx-Jx
- Jx-Jx-10x
- Jx-10x-10x
- 10x-10x-10x
- 4x-4x-4x
- 10x-10x-4x
- 4x-4x-Jx
- Etc
You can understand that all the cards on the flop MUST connect with your card for you to win the big boy. If you have any question on this, you can message me and I’ll explain it further.
4. KILLER 3: Now this is the most thrilling one, I call this the deadliest of all props. Lets say for example, your suit is spades and if a 3 of spades falls on the river, all the prop won by your opponent (if any) is automatically transferred to you! Imagine if your opponent had hit his big boy and you hit the 3 of spades on the river, sick isn’t it?
There are some important points you must take care of while playing props, you MUST CLAIM your prop wins before the hand is over. If the dealer has mucked the community cards, you cannot make any claims. And most importantly, make sure you choose the one who can multi task for keeping the records as any delay in recording the prop bets and confusion may disturb other players in the game.
Well, there are many other prop bets I play. I’ve highlighted the most significant ones. You can also make prop bets with who is going to win the hand, who is going to fold first or just about anything. Prop bets is usually lots of fun but sometimes very risky, there were games where I was up by a lot in the game but lost it all on props. In the same way, there are games, where I was losing in the game but broke even through my prop winnings. Fortunately for me, there are no games where I’m losing both in props and game. Lucky me!
Hope you try out some prop bets in your next game and do let me know if you have some idea for some nice prop bets. (I love playing props more than the games in most of my games)
Till then, c'ya guys!
