Dhruv - 02 Nov

02/11/2011

After a streak of bad days, finally finish with a profit! However, today was a day of thorough introspection and changes. Over the last few days when I was going through a downswing, I kept analysing my hands. While I could clearly identify the mistakes, I couldn't understand why was I making them. I knew better than to make such calls. That's when I noticed how all my bad decisions were towards the tail end of all my sessions! I figured maybe I get tired during the session, but don't get up when I should.

Maybe this is why I book profits in the session, only to lose it towards the end! One reason I never thought of the time of the sessions to be an issue is because when I used to play live in London, I have had 5-6 hour sessions at the cash table and booked profits at the end of it! But one thing I seemed to have missed...the hourly hand rate! Playing live, I must have been averaging 20-30 hands per hour, while online, it's usually upwards of 100! I definitely feel that online poker tends to tire me a lot more quickly than live poker.

To see whether my theory had any substance, today I decided to experiment with shorter sessions. I kept a clock on myself for 1.5 hours per session. It doesn't matter how good I am rolling, once the timer is down to zero, I don't post any more blinds and leave the next time I am supposed to be BB. This seemed to work today, let's see how it goes tomorrow!

Today, I'd like to highlight one hand that took place towards the end of the day's play:

Entraction - €0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3: http://www.pokertracker.com

UTG: €18.78
MP: €7.19
CO: €16.14
Hero (BTN): €8.39
SB: €10.48
BB: €4.59

SB posts SB €0.05, BB posts BB €0.10
Pre Flop: (€0.15) Hero has 7h 7c
UTG raises to €0.35, fold, fold, Hero calls €0.35, fold, BB calls €0.25
Flop: (€1.10, 3 players) Jh 7d Th
BB bets €1.10, fold, Hero raises to €3.57, BB raises to €4.24 and is all-in, Hero calls €0.67

I flopped a set of 7s. However, with a board full of draws, it need not be good news! Usually, I would not have played a set of 7s so strongly on such a board. But having seen BB playing for about 20 mins, it seemed evident that he was in a hurry to double up. It seems that his strategy was to sit with few chips, gamble on the flop, and if it works, double up to a healthy stack. This is the reason I realised that BB could be playing any amount of draws and would be willing to get them all in on the flop. I had already folded a few marginal hands to BB's crazy shoves, and figured it was time to take a stand.

Turn: (€9.58, 2 players) 8c
River: (€9.58, 2 players) Tc
BB shows Kh 9h (Straight, Jack High) (PreFlop 47%, Flop 41%, Turn 74%)
Hero shows 7h 7c (Full House, Sevens full of Tens) (PreFlop 53%, Flop 59%, Turn 26%)
Hero wins €9.11

Even if I had lost this pot, I don't think it would have upset me too much. The way BB was shoving, it was clear he had a gambling streak through him! I feel I could have easily recovered my chips even if I lost this hand.

Net result for the day: profit of 90BB. Not an extreme profit, but I will take it considering how the last few days have gone!

Cheers and good luck at the tables!
