'The World Famous PLO Variance Rears it's Ugly Head!' - Dhruv

08/11/2011

After yesterday's success at the PLO table where I doubled my BR, today I hit the PLO tables again. However, today I encountered the famous PLO variance! Another difference I found in the competition between NLHE and PLO is that PLO players tend to gamble a lot more on 4th and 5th streets.

This is mainly due to the huge difference in draw equities you get because of the 2 vs 4 hole cards. And of course, at lower stakes, the gamblers have more reasons to justify their lucky calls, so end up gambling more often than in NLHE. As can be expected, you get drawn out a lot more than NLHE. One hand that completely blew my mind, was when on the turn, I had the nut straight, with no flush possibility and the board wasn't paired, hence ruling out boats and quads. My only villain bet pot size, I raised him pot size which would put him all in. He call and shows pocket 2s for a set. At this point, I was the 70%+ favourite. Probably one of the best odds in PLO to get all your chips in! But when the river gives the villain quad ducks, all my odds go down the gutter!

At the end of the day, ended up with a BR busting day! Can't be too pissed off with it though, as my play wasn't very wrong. Although some of my calls were questionable, generally my play was pretty decent. Being only the 2nd day playing PLO, I'm currently break even. Things could have been a lot worse, considering I'm fairly new to this format. Lets see how tomorrow goes. If I end up with another bad day, I think I will have to balance my PLO and NLHE games to distribute the risks.

Cheers and good luck at the tables!
