Latest News from the WSOP
Yesterday was another historic day at the 2012 World Series of Poker, as all eyes were on Event 35: $2,500 Mixed Hold'em, where Phil Ivey was in hunt for his ninth bracelet by making his fifth final table of the summer. Unfortunately, this was not on the cards. An extremely unfortunate series of events led to Ivey's bustout in eighth, starting with a suckout at the hands of Samuel Golbluff. In the hand, Ivey raised, and Golbluff reraised all-in holding 6-2. It didn't take long for Ivey to make the call with 8-8, but Golbluff ended up rivering a straight to cripple Ivey, who earned $21,699. In the absence of the main rival, Las Vegas poker Pro and WSOP Circuit grinder - Chris Tryba was able to overcome the field and beat Erik Cajelais heads-up to collect his first ever gold bracelet and $210,107 in prize money.
Even more dramatic turned out to be Event # 36: $ 3,000 NL Hold'em Shootout, where Antonio Esfandiari was on the verge of winning his second WSOP bracelet. Three-handed in Event 36, the $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout, Antonio Esfandiari had roughly 73 percent of the chips in play against American Jeremiah Fitzpatrick and Craig McCorkell. It was such a prohibitive lead that at one point Esfandiari’s two heads-up opponents were discussing a deal to chop second and third place, something that’s altogether unheard of in tournament poker. But then something strange began to happen – Esfandiari was losing all-ins one after another, and in less than an hour was eliminated in third place for $151,613. When the heads-up was over, it was Craig McCorkell, becoming the first U.K. winner of the 2012 WSOP and the owner of $368,593.
We still do not know the winner of the Event #37: $2,500 Eight-Game Mix that has tested 477 players’ mettle in a variety of games: Triple-Draw 2-7, Limit Hold'em, Omaha 8, Razz, Stud, Stud 8, No-Limit Hold’em, and Pot Limit Omaha. While we were scheduled to have a winner by now, circumstances have brought about the need for a fourth day as David “ODB” Baker and Greg “FBT” Mueller have hit the hard-stop time on Day 2. Action will pick up today in Level 30, when Mueller will enter with 2.655 million chips to Baker’s 925,000.
