Frederik Jensen Triumphs at EPT Madrid
Last Saturday eight players sat down at the final table of EPT Madrid, to define the owner of €545.000 and an EPT title. This final table had a combination of experienced EPT veterans, online qualifiers and recreational players, but it was Frederik Jensen, who was named the favorite due to his second place in the Aussie Millions and the final table of EPT Vilamoura last season, but let’s not run before the hounds…
Final Table EPT Madrid
The things started pretty logically, as three shortstacks were first to exit. The Canadian Jason Duval ("the guy who checked a royal flush on the river") was followed by France’s Nicolas Levi and Ilan Boujenah. 5th place and € 115,000 went to the only Spanish finalist - Ricardo Ibañez Rodriguez. A 34-year-old welder from Leon, Spain, started the final table as a chip leader, but did deserve laurels, sticking in memory by the first penalty in the history of EPT final tables. He was assigned such a punishment after an attempt to imitate pushing the chips in the middle, trying to mislead his opponent.
Rap star Bruno "Kool Shen" Lopes showed a solid game, but had to finish 4th after an insulting badbeat. One of the founding fathers of hip hop in France had called Frederick Jensen’s push with K-K on the 7c-6h-3s flop and turned to be right. The Dane grabbed his head, showing two pairs - 6c-5h, but caught one of his outs on the 5c turn, becoming a big chip leader. Lopez was crippled and hit the rail in one of the next hands, receiving € 140,000 for his efforts. Those unfamiliar with the compositions of "Kool Shen", may watch his hit "Un Ange dans Le Ciel" that has had more than five million hits on YouTube.
After Bruno’s elimination the three managed to thrash out a deal guaranteeing MacIntyre €290,000, Stoenescu €330,000, and the chip leader, Jensen, picked up €385,000, leaving with the rest to play for. Stoenescu busted out in third place in a big pot against Jensen when his Kd-8h failed to hold against Jensen's 7s-6s flush draw on a flop of 10d-8s-5s. The Ks on the turn gave Stoenescu a few outs, but he missed them on the Qc river. This left Jensen holding a 2:1 chip lead over MacIntyre and victory was sealed for the Danish pro after a short 15-minute heads up battle.
Frederik Jensen - Champion EPT Madrid
Thanks to his €290,000 payday Fraser MacIntyre moved into second place on Scotland’s all-time live tournament money list behind David Vamplew, while Jensen becomes the second consecutive EPT champion from Denmark, joining his compatriot Mickey Petersen – the winner of previous EPT Copenhagen. For the victory Jensen pocketed €495,000 and a Shamballa Jewels bracelet valued at more than €10,000. Our congratulations to the newest EPT Champion! The next stop on the European Poker Tour is in Campione, Italy March 26-31. See you there!
