Facebook Allowed Real Money Gaming
It seems that the largest social network, which until recently was ranged against gambling, has changed its policy, announcing that it will launch its first real money gambling platform for UK customers. The current trend for big-money bingo has hit Facebook in the form of a real-cash gambling app called Bingo & Slots Friendzy.
The app, the name of which sets the expectation bar fairly low, is Facebook's first app that allows gambling with real money and is available only to UK users of the social network. In line with UK law, you'll have to be 18 to chance your arm at some real cash prizes, with stringent "account acceptance controls verifying their identity" in place to stop younger players.
Commenting on the venture, James Cordorniou Head of Gaming Partnerships, said: “Gambling is very popular and well-regulated in the UK ... for millions of bingo users it’s already a social experience [so] it makes sense [for us] to offer that as well.” It seems that bingo is just the start, as Cordorniou also indicated that other casino games such as blackjack and roulette would also be available soon.
Facebook shift towards gambling is easy-to-understand. After going public last May the company’s shares have nearly halved to around $20, and last month the social network reported a loss of $157 million for its second quarter. Facebook will reportedly take a 30% cut of Gamesys’s revenue from Bingo Friendzy, as it seeks to show that online gambling can be a new way to draw in revenue.
Besides, gambling is legal and regulated here in the United Kingdom. Facebook reportedly said that it chose to launch a real-cash gambling app in the U.K. because of the country’s “a mature and very well-regulated gambling market.” Which means it’s probably not worried that kids will be attracted to the colorful creatures in its new game.
