'2 Cats and the Monkey Story' - Martin

03/11/2011

Today I decided to try some heads up games again, sat down in a 5-10 cents HU game. My opponent was good and definitely had more HU experience than me, Well..that’s not much of a saying as I don’t play much HU.

The game started off pretty slow, both of us not building up any big pots, there were hardly any showdowns in the early session. However as the pace stepped up, decent size pots began to swing. In several occasions, there were huge swings. Stealing pots became our major arsenal, both of us playing very aggressive the moment the pot was big.

I had to make 2 rebuys while he made 1 add-on. There were definitely coolers where either of us lost big, but in heads-up that was pretty normal.

We definitely played long (almost an hour perhaps), the game was pretty neck to neck, the last hand went like this, I was dealt K-8 of spades, I raised it on the Button, he smooth called. Flops came A-7-3…. Wait for it…..wait for it… Yup! All spades, I made the Nut flush on the flops. We both checked the flops, turn came a Queen, He opened the pot with a half Pot size bet. I felt there was no need to slow-play anymore so I re-raised him, pretty much expecting him to fold. WOW! He 4 bets….HE RE-RAISED! After a short Pause, I prayed he had a good hand and moved all-in, we were pretty deep stacked so maybe, if he had a good hand he would think of it as a bluff like a Pair and a King High Flush draw. He hesitated for a while but eventually called and turned over Q-7 for 2 pairs.

I waited to fade out the river and a nice ‘some card other than Q or 7’ came out (was too excited to see what it was, I just made sure it was’nt a Queen or a seven).

I felt pretty exhausted, I really wonder how those poker pros like Durrrrr and Ivey play those heads-up games for long sessions. I got up from my seat and checked my balance and that’s when I got shocked, Even though I stacked him at last, I was down by 0.30 something. I laughed, We both played hard, played really patient but in the end the Rakes won! LOL! It reminded me of the story of the 2 cats and a monkey where the cats were fighting over a piece of cheese and in the end it was the monkey who ate all the cheese.

Anyway, it was a good game. My opponent was definitely a seasoned HU player, I was lucky to have my chips in a right time. I am planning not to play more HU games due to my limited experience but with all the action a HU game can provide, It’ll be difficult to stay away from it.
