Ultimate Poker Challenge to Kick Off in Goa

11/05/2012

India’s vibrant poker scene is about to witness the birth of another tournament series which is a collaboration between two of its biggest tournament brands – Aces Unlimited and India Poker Championship. The two organisers are jointly staging the Ultimate Poker Challenge (UPC) on May 16-20, 2012 aboard Casino Pride in Panjim, Goa.

The UPC will feature a two-day INR 50,000 buy-in Main Event (INR 1,500,000 guarantee) and three side events of a 5k Rebuy + Add-on (INR 300,000 guarantee), 10k Freezeout (INR 400,000 guarantee) and 12k Bounty (INR 300,000 guarantee).

Joint partnerships between different tournament organisers seem to be on an upward trend in Goa. Back in December 2011, the India Poker Series and India Poker Pros banded together to launch the India Pros Poker Series.

“Simply speaking, it’s a matter of survival and consolidation,” said Peter Abraham, co-director of the India Poker Championship. “The Indian poker market has huge potential but needs to be handled with kid gloves to allow itself to develop and grow in the right manner. While 2010-11 was considered a golden period for the sport, it really was a case of 'too much too soon' with an overabundance of tournament operators and tournaments.”

The latest collaboration of the UPC was created from a familiarity and mutual respect between the two operators. Abraham explained, “We've known Rajeev (Kanjani) and Jasven (Saigal), directors at Aces Unlimited, for a long time now because we are from the same city and have played a lot of poker together before starting our own respective ventures related to the sport. We share the same kind of thought with regard to the growth of poker in India so it was a natural progression and extension of this philosophy which has led to this collaboration.”

The tournament finishes the day before the Asian Poker Tour returns to Goa on May 21-27 for the second running of APT Asian Series Goa and could be a good starting off point for any visiting players wanting to arrive in the area early.

“I'm confident that we will not only hit our guarantees, but go beyond them as well. We have the Asian Poker Tour taking place right after the UPC so a higher influx of the early-birds coming in for that tournament should also add to our numbers. The guarantees are just an added incentive for players who perhaps are unaware of IPC and Aces Unlimited's past track record of hosting successful tournaments.”

Players can register for any of the UPC events at www.ultimatepokerchallenge.in.
