Bogdanov Triumphs at WPT Venice
We’d like to start our daily review with the news from WPT Venice - €4,950 buy-in tournament at the Casinó di Venezia that reached its final table just a few days ago. Four of the six players remaining were from Italy, but it was Denmark’s Simon Ravnsbaek and Russian Rinat Bogdanov, who played first fiddle. However, the tournament’s fate of these two was completely opposite.
If Simon quickly bluffed off his entire stack and was out in fourth place ($69,095) just after Carini and Trebbi, then Bogdanov reached 3-max phase and even dispatched Andrea Dato at the 3rd place. The Italian decided to push his short-stack with K-4o and ran into the A-K of Bogdanov, gaining $95,003 and letting the Russian into the heads-up play.
Before the heads-up match start Rinat had a chip lead and four illustrative examples of previous Russian WPT champions: Alexander Kuzmin, Dmitry Gromov, Natalia Nikitina and Andrey Pateychuk. On the Italian’s side was a big local crowd that believed that their fellow countryman Alessandro Longobardi would win. However, these hopes were dashed after the second hand of heads-up play.
With blinds at 40,000/80,000 Longobardi raised with K-Q to 200,000 with Bogdanov making the call with 6c-4c. The Russian then check-called his opponent’s 60,000 bet on the Q-7-4 flop, and his 240,000 bet on the 6 turn. Finally, when a 4 on the river completed Bogdanov’s full-house, he cannily checked once again into Longobardi, who made a 300,000 bet with his two pair. The Italian then called the Russian’s all-in re-raise only to see that he was trapped.
Consequently, Longobardi had to content himself with $146,826, while Rinat Bogdanov took home the $302,065 first prize plus a $25,500 ticket to the WPT Championship in May. Our congratulations to a happy winner!
