Preparation is an important part of running your own home poker game successfully. It is not difficult to set up for a home poker game, and getting it right will help the game run much more smoothly. In ideal situation, you will have everything prepared in advance of everyone arriving to the game is ready to start.

You should already have the required poker equipment and decided what sort of poker you will be playing – either cash poker or tournament poker. It is then a matter of setting up the equipment ready for everyone and making sure the rules are clearly defined.

Setting up your poker equipment for a poker home game is straightforward enough. You need to make sure you have a seat for every player and enough tables to seat everyone taking part. Remember, in poker it is a maximum of ten players to a table and ideally you want the same amount of players on each table. If you are expecting 14 players, for example, it is best to seat them seven to each table rather than 10 on one table and 4 on the other.

The poker chips also need to be counted out and each player provided with an equal number of chips to make up their starting stack. One starting stack per player should be placed in front of each seat ready for the start. For the early rounds of tournaments, you should have plenty of low denomination chips for when the blinds are low. These can then be exchanged for higher denomination chips as the blind levels increase throughout the tournament.

There needs a deck of playing cards placed on each table and it is worth having a few spare packs in case some cards get damaged or marked. Refreshments for the players usually go down well too, particularly if it’s going to be a long game.

When the players arrive, take some time to lay out and explain the rules of the game to everybody – this way no-one can complain that they weren’t sure of a rule. If you are playing cash, then you just need to tell everyone what stakes you are playing and what the buy-in rules are. If it’s going to be a tournament, then you’ll also need to explain the structure to everyone.
