Foreigners are Picking up Steam at the WSOP
Had not we managed to write about the American hegemony in the WSOP tournaments just a few days ago, as two bracelet flew outside the United States. The first one went to Belgium thanks to the efforts of Michael Gathy, who became victorious in Event #21: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em topping a massive field of 2,778 players.
The top 297 finishers collected prize money. The final table of nine included two gold bracelet winners – John Esposito and Eric Baldwin, but it was Michael Gathy, who reached the heads-up against Jamie Armstrong. On the final hand of the night, Gathy got it all-in with the chip lead holding
against Armstrong's
. The board ran out

and it was good enough to give Gathy the win, the bracelet, and the $440,820 first prize. Armstrong received $273,776 for second place.
The second non-American gold bracelet went to Simon Charette – winner of of Event #23: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed. With just 18 players remaining going into Day 3, among which were such notable ones, as Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Freddy Deeb, Andrew Lichtenberger, Eugene Katchalov and Scott Montgomery, it was Simon Charette, who has now bested his second-place finish that occurred last year during Event #48: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em and took home took home the gold bracelet and the $567,624 that went along with it.
The best joke of the night belongs to Jean Robert Bellande, who spent most of the day's playing next to Phil Ivey. At some point, Jean-Robert wrote on Twitter that his was sitting next to the world’s best poker player, and one of the friends asked him to say hello to Andy Frankenberger. They say, Ivey enjoyed that needle.
