D’Souza  Wins APT Asian Series Goa Event #4

With one day to go before the Main Event starts at APT Asian Series Goa, 49 players readied themselves by climbing aboard Casino Royale for a INR 15,000 warm-up in the form of the Freezeout 2 side event. However, it turned into much more than just a practice session for Clawin D’Souza who took home the title and INR 264,000 in first place winnings.

D’Souza’s victory came over a field that included players such as Sangeeth Mohan, Abhishek Goindi, Aditya “Mastermind” Agarwal, Pulkit Kalia, Kristian Faering and Bharat Naidu. Mohan was, in fact, looking at making his third side event final table in a row. His previous 2nd and 3rd results have reportedly catapulted him up the APT Player of the Year list to 9th position but he bowed out in 14th place this time when his  8♠ 8♥  fell short against Vipan Sharma’s  K♠ Q♥ on a board of  J♣ Q♣ 5♥ 3♠ 5♠.

Making the final table in this event, however, didn’t guarantee players of cashing. Just five places were paid which meant that the bubble was a particularly big one for a INR 15,000 buy-in event. With INR 59,500 set for 5th place, it was no surprise that it took a particularly long time to pop. Play stalled at six-handed for over 90 minutes but at least those remaining had Vipan Sharma to entertain them with his table banter.

Vipan Sharma

When the time finally came, the talkative Sharma was also responsible for knocking out bubble boy Nitish Gupta who flipped over  A♦ Q♥ when Sharma called his push. “Give him a queen please dealer,” said Sharma as he turned over his  Q♠ Q♦ to have Gupta definitely hoping for the ace instead. But neither of them got their wish as the board came  7♠ 10♣ 2♣ 7♦ 3♣, which was enough to send Gupta home empty-handed.

With each player cashing, it didn’t take long then for Shravan Chhabria to go after he shoved with  Q♠ J♦ and saw Kishore Marimganti follow with his big stack holding  A♥ 10♣ and Ishwar S add to the car crash with  K♠ K♥. Ishwar’s excitement at being well ahead quickly changed to devastation when the flop came  A♦ 5♥ 6♠ but the turn  K♦ had him back in high spirits with trip kings and in the chip lead on the river 5♣.

Although Marimganti still had chips and went on to double up soon after, he never fully recovered and went out in 4th place. Having made the final table with just a 7000 stack, Marimganti can’t have been too upset but is probably a little raw considering he also came 4th in yesterday’s side event and surely wondering what he has to do to win one of these.

Clawin D’Souza

Sharma was next to go after shoving with  Q♥ J♣ and getting called off by Clawin D’Souza with  A♥ 7♥. D’Souza was the only one to connect on the resulting board, pairing his seven, and then picked up Pocket Queens the next hand to oust Sharma’s crippled stack in 3rd.

This gave D’Souza the chip lead going into heads up with Ishwar but it proceeded to swing back and forth between the two before it was all over. The final hand came with Ishwar shoving holding  2♦ 2♠ and D’Souza making the call and needing to hit with  K♥ Q♦. The board delivered  10♠ 3♠ Q♥ A♥ 4♥ to pair up D’Souza’s queen and with a fist pump he becomes our latest APT trophy winner.

Freezeout 2 (Event #4) Payouts :

1. Clawin D’Souza – INR 264,000
2. Ishwar S – INR 165,400
3. Vipan Sharma – INR 99,200
4. Kishore Marimganti – INR 72,800
5. Shravan Chhabria – INR 59,500
