News from Rio
Another day came to an end at Rio and we are eager to share its results with you. Let’s start with Event 26: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, 18 last participants of which returned yesterday with hopes of capturing the coveted World Series of Poker gold bracelet. Leading the way with 741,000 was Vadim Kursevich, who stayed in front for nearly the entire day, but then the big clash came with Austin Scott when action was four-handed at the final table.
Scott and Kursevich got all the money in on the board of

in a massive pot of 3.7 million in chips. Kursevich held the

for a set of nines, but it was not enough against Scott’s

. Vadim hit the rail in 3rd place ($158,530), while Ostin finished his run over the table knocking out Brett Richey next. For his efforts Scott got his first-ever World Series of Poker gold bracelet and $361,797 in prize money.
If Ostin won his first ever bracelet, then Scotty Nguyen was very close to winning his sixth one, when going heads-up against Joe Cassidy in Event #24: $5,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better. Unfortunately, for Prince of Poker, he had to settle for a second place and just over $182,000. “I’m disappointed but it’s not my time today baby. When it’s not your time you just have to think about the next one,” commented Nguyen afterwards. “It was Joe Cassidy’s time and I congratulate him,” said Nguyen. We also congratulate Joe, who collected his first ever gold bracelet and a $294,777 payday.
Guess who finished this tournament in third place? The omnipresent Phil Ivey missed out on another title, but this finish did move him to the top of the WSOP POY ranking with 383.55 points. He now sits just ahead of Andy Frankenberger with 372.16 points and John Monette, on account of which 310.50 points.
