Latest News from the WSOP
We will not break with our tradition and begin our review with the news from Rio. And first to go is the 2012 World Series of Poker $1,000 senior’s no-limit hold’em championship, which drew a whopping 4,128 entrants, making it the largest single starting day field in poker history. The climax of the night was the heads-up between Dennis Phillips and Allyn Jaffrey Shulman. Card Player CEO, Shulman was at one point down about five-to-one in chips, but she kept fighting and also got a little lucky with a runner-runner straight to get the momentum back on her side. Thus, such a mix of luck and diligence helped her earn over $600,000 and her first-ever World Series of Poker gold bracelet. Phillips was awarded $372,895 for his runner-up finish.
In addition to her first WSOP title, Shulman also earned her place in poker history. By making this final table she completed a Shulman-family trifecta, becoming the first family to have three members make WSOP final tables during one Series. Card Player publisher Barry Shulman made the final table of a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event on the same day that his son and Card Player CEO Jeff Shulman made the final table of the $5,000 limit hold’em championship, finishing eighth and third respectively. But it was Allyn Jaffrey, who gave a lead, becoming the first woman to win a mixed-gender event at the WSOP since Vanessa Selbst won her bracelet in 2008.
The result of event 30: $1,500 2-7 Draw Lowball also turned out to be rather surprising, given the fact that its future champion confessed afterwards that he had only learned how to play Single Draw four days ago and accidentally mucked a deuce instead of an ace on day one when he was drawing one card. However, this fact had not prevented Larry Wright from defeating a star-studded final table and a total of 284 players in order to claim a World Series of Poker gold bracelet. Larry pocketed $101,975 in prize money, making himself and his family a great Father’s Day gift.
The final table of Event 32: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. was a virtual “Who’s who of poker”, consisting of six former gold bracelet winners with a combined 25 WSOP titles among them. Most notable rivalry was between Phil Helmuth and Phil Ivey, who made their six and fourth finale this year. However, it was David "Bakes" Baker, who became the champion, collecting $451,779 in prize money, which places him close to $1.5 million in career earnings. He also collected gold bracelet number two, following a win two years ago in $10,000 buy-in Deuce-to-Seven Lowball World Championship.
