'Impure Winnings' - Sidharth
I always thought playing poker online was a little less of poker because it's not 'pure'. You can't see other players, you can't read off their tells and you can mislead them only to a certain extent. I still think it's largely true that you are missing out on a lot of information in general, but I don't think any less of it any more.
You see, I've been winning.
Yes. Playing only tournaments, I've been making a lot of money. They are very profitable if you're playing the $2.50 180-man SNGs at Pokerstars. At least to me. I'm up over $450 in just less than a month. And I owe it largely to tells. I got 'tells' from an HUD. Not one of those illegal central-database types. Just a display which shows all the vital statistics from the game I'm currently playing (I suppose this isn't illegal). I use SuperHUD, without paying for the extra features. And just knowing the VPIP, PFR% and the aggression factor have been IMMENSELY helpful. OK granted, they become useless when it gets to the push-fold stage because everyone's stats start to sky-rocket, but in the low blind levels, they're a gem. You know exactly what range of hands people play, how easy they are to bluff, etc. OK maybe everyone knows this, but I just found out now.
But then I realized I have a problem. If I'm using one of these profitably, I can bet other people are using it as well. That means they'll be looking at my statistics too. So here's what I decided. I look around for the multi-tablers. They're easy to find, you just right-click and click Find this player. Then when you find the multitablers, you change their colour and add a note saying multitablers. Now, you can almost bet that these people are using an HUD of some sort. Now. I start a timer for 6 minutes. Against the multitablers, I play tight the first 6 minutes - TAG. Then, in the next 6 minutes, I play LAG and I alternate between the two every 6 minutes. So what comes up on their HUDs? Something that's in the middle, and which isn't even true for the most part. I mean, if I play 8% of my hands the first interval and 40% of my hands the second, they should see a VPIP of around 25% which will throw them off either way.
Mind you, this is only against the multitablers. Against non-multitablers, this isn't an issue, because I don't expect them to have an HUD. Or maybe they do. But either way, this method of shifting gears is good. Right?
