Doing a What?

26/12/2011

Recently I was playing a cash game on pokerstars and in one particular hand I made a 9 high flush on the river and I was check-raised all in by my opponent. After tanking a bit, I asked ‘Ace high Flush?’but since I was getting almost 4 to 1 on a call, I made the call and just as I expected my opponent turned over Ace-high flush. Someone on the table commented ‘Tiger (Yes, that’s my online name), You did a Negreanu, you made a read and still called’.

I realized how interesting that was, every poker player has a unique characteristic which is associated with them. Like for other example, Doing a Hellmuth would mean to cry and whine after a bad beat, Doing a Tony G would mean to insult an opponent to an extreme extent that could create a war. I decided to make a list of ‘Doing an X person’ on all my regular Home game poker buddies. See if you associate yourself or some of the players whom you play regularly with one of them.

1. Doing a Tovika : Playing more than 10,000 hands for almost 2 years and improving 0 steps in Poker.

Origin- He’s one of my friend who has not made any ummm……’modification’ in his playing style since day 1 when he didn't know the difference between 3-of-a-kind and 2 pairs. I’ve written an article mainly based on him in one of my blogs.

2. Doing a Joel: Self proclaimed ability of possessing the knowledge of what exact cards are coming on the turn and river. (Which he actually gets it right 1 out of 18 predictions and due to the power of marketing, the correct prediction is highlighted way way way beyond the incorrect predictions)

Origin- Quote ‘I predict 3 of clubs will be the turn…there there there I said it, did’nt i?? Did’nt i…you saw it..you saw it’ ‘ But that’s 3 of spades’ ‘Spades black, clubs black…tomato-tomaato’

3. Doing a Leon: Making a huge profit till the last minutes of the game and Losing it all in 1 hand after trying to bluff all-in preflops with 9-3 offsuit against Big pockets.

Origin- Origin of his insanity unknown.

4. Doing an Allen: Waiting for Ace-King for 2 hours and when he finally gets that hand, he misplays.

Origin- He’s such a quiet player on the table, people notice him only when he coughs.

5. Doing a Ruati: (One of My favorites) Playing her hands without a care in this world what her opponent have..and acts very surprised when she sees she’s beaten with a better hand.

Origin: Board is 10-10-7-7-8 (3 players). 1st player bets, she calls, 3rd players raises, 1st player goes all-in, she calls, 3rd player calls…she turns over J-9 for straight and both opponents have a ’10’., Due to some unknown reasons, she was genuinely surprised at the outcome of the hand.

6. Doing a Susan: Having the God-gifted ability to impersonate any famous poker players; Dwan, Antonius, Ivey, Doyle Brunson, Max Rofls, Tony G…….with the same voice and accent.

Origin: No origin, she was born with this talent. She is currently considering in applying for Indian X-factor impersonating Arnold Swaisnieggggggeeeeeeeeerrrr.

7. Doing a Ramit: Tanking for almost 5 minutes on every big decision and ending in the same result- Folding. Also, taking a painfully long time to deal the river on a huge pot as he is busy discussing his analysis of a hand…..which happened a year ago.

Origin: He once tanked so long, his opponent went to play badminton instead. His opponent did not come to claim the pot after Ramit folded.

8. Doing a Charles: Making a face that resembles a painful expression of a POW during interrogation in world-war II and scratching his head as the decision was too difficult, while holding 2 Kings in his hand and the other 2 kings on the flops.

Origin: 1 player moved all-in, next player calls…and Charles was in pain to be in such a decision holding Quad-Kings. He however, made the right decision at the end after going through all the complicated analysis of his opponents and won the pot. Good for you, mate!

9. Doing a Zico: Reading newspaper or suddenly feeling extremely sleepy/drowsy on the poker table when he’s winning a lot of chips. Maybe the horrendous task of counting so many chips caused him this negative physical reaction.

Origin: The origin is unknown too however, ‘Doing a Zico’ is highly contagious!

10. Doing a Panky: Cracking Aces, Cowboys, etc with hands like 10-7 offsuit, 10-7 suited ,10-7 & 10-7. There has been a rumor that this hand has helped him win over 5K…………..and got him stuck over 10K.

Origin: Called a 4-bet with 10-7 and flopping 10-10-7. Nice Flops, eh?

11. Doing a Martin: Winning a heads-up match having 180 chips over his opponent’s 2500 chips. (Yes, That’s me!)

Origin: In a winner take all tournament, Martin beat his opponent being over 1:14 underdog at the start , it was mainly credited to run-good and intoxicated Opponent. However, Martin claims it was skills, patience and extreme optimism.

12. Doing a Janet: Losing a heads-up match having 2500 chips over her opponent’s 180 chips.

Origin: Janet refuses to comment on this.

Hope you can relate to some of my poker buddies here. Till next time, Bye!

By the way, Doing a Zico has been made illegal in our games! Thank God!
